International logistics conferences

The annual Transport Logistic fair was held in Munich from 4 till 7 June. New trends in transport and logistics were presented and over 2,000 exhibitors offered their products on 115,000 m2. Czech Republic was represented by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic. The main themes of this year included the development of the new Silk Road and the overall challenges of the future, such as concepts against urban collapse.
Our Multimex representatives attended the fair on 5-6 June to establish new contacts and expand the existing network with the aim to further improve the quality of our services for our customers.
Another event which our company attends every year is the worldwide conference of the MarcoPoloLine Group, which will be held from 20 to 24 September in Athens. This 12th year will address new trends in ocean freight to improve services for our customers.

When does the shipment pass through customs clearance?

The shipment must pass through the customs clearance whenever it is sent from the Czech Republic to a country outside the EU or from a country outside the EU to the Czech Republic. Attention - even shipments that are sent to Norway, Switzerland or Turkey need to go through the customs clearance! The same applies also for shipments to certain territories belonging to EU countries (eg the Faroe Islands).

List of EU countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

What does the customs clearance mean?

Customs clearance means issuing customs documents. Every shipment that is sent outside the EU has to undergo customs clearance, whether export or import.

What do you need from me to clear the export shipment through the customs?

When you are sending a shipment outside the EU we will need an invoice (commercial or proforma), packing list, power of attorney and disposition. Based on these documents we can represent you and arrange for the export customs clearance within the Czech Republic. Each exporter must be assigned with EORI number by the Customs Administration. For certain goods (alcohol or other sensitive goods) additional documents (various certificates, etc.) may be required. Our colleagues from the customs declaration would inform you about such a case.

What do you need from me to clear the import shipment through the customs?

When you should receive a shipment from a non-EU country, it has to pass through the import customs clearance. The customs office will, if necessary, assess a customs debt (customs duty, excise tax ...). You must be assigned with EORI number (see above) and you must grant us a proxy for customs representation. Upon successful completion of the customs clearance, you will have to pay any assessed customs debt and then the shipment will be delivered to you.

What is the difference between an invoice and a proforma invoice?

A normal commercial invoice is used when you send goods for sale or for other purposes (gift, loan, etc.) and their value is higher (the approximate threshold is CZK 25,000). For import duties only commercial invoices can be used.
A pro-forma invoice can only be used if the goods are of a "non-commercial" nature (you do not sell the goods) and their value is not high. In practice, Proforma is used when sending samples to your business partners, eventually gifts, etc., or for shipments of private goods between individuals.

What is EORI number?

EORI number is an identifier assigned by the state, resp. Customs Administration, based on which the subjects within the customs clearance (import and export) are identified. Just like companies have been assigned with business IDs within the Czech Republic,  subjects participating in customs proceedings must be assigned with EORI number. Each exporter or importer is assigned with one unique permanent EORI number (mostly identical to the company VAT number), private persons are always assigned ad hoc for each individual case of customs clearance.
